VGL CINEMA: The challenge was accepted: the crisis brought "CyberBrukivka" to life
⚡🎬🎥❗ On May 16, exactly a month later, on the Day of Kamianets-Podilskyi, the international festival "CyberBrukivka_2(4)20" will take place.
☝️ This year the famous "BRUKIVKA" upgraded the name and was one of the first to orient in the new realities, moved to the network with all participants and guests.
👌 Andrii Zaiets - President of the film festival, festival film selector, author and organizer of the festival "CyberBrukivka", told VGL cinema why he sees the crisis as a challenge to action and new opportunities.
✔Due to quarantine, many events, festivals and awards will be held online. Please tell us whether the "networking" affected the structure of your festival: the composition of the participants, the jury, the conditions of submission and acceptance of works, etc.
- I have been thinking about the new formats of the Kamyanets-Podilsky BRUKIVKA Film Festival for a long time. After a large-scale festival in 2019, I decided to take a break for a few years and come up with a concept for the next three film festivals. But the coronavirus pandemic, the new financial crisis and the cancellation of almost 90% of cultural events in the first two quarters of 2020 prompted me in mid-March to start accepting work for the extraordinary "BRUKIVKA", which was named "CyberBrukivka2 (4) 20". Its final will take place on May 16 in online format.
The big movie premiere of my feature film "Once in the City on a Stone" was scheduled for May 15, 2020, but recent events have prompted me to premiere online also on May 16, Kam Day. Jan-Podilsky and Europe Day in Ukraine.
✔ What will be the format of the event? How will the process of selecting and announcing the winners be organized? How will the audience be able to watch the awarding process?
- As of today, more than 2,000 works from 90 countries have been submitted to our festival, and this is our new record. This time the festival is 100% independent and without state funding. Today, I, a permanent selector of the festival, and Denis Budanov, a member of the Ukrainian Film Academy and the Union of Film Critics of Ukraine, are working on the selection of works. Each time we have a separate genre nomination. This year we are betting on short films for both amateurs and professionals in the genres of cyberpunk, post-apocalypse, horror, science fiction and fantasy. Until May 1, we will have a selection of short films in the following categories: Ukrainian amateur film, Ukrainian professional film, international professional film, film up to 60 seconds, shot at home, and film shot in Kamianets-Podilskyi. The composition of the jury members will be known by the end of April, and the festival itself will take place live after 14:00 on Saturday, May 16, on the website brukivkafest.com, on the update of which we are actively working. Between the performances of the finalists, you will be entertained by our constant presenter and rock musician Georgy "Geron Zai" Toryanyk.
✔Have the goals and objectives of the festival changed with the change of the format of the event - the transition to the network? Will you now adjust the future strategy of the festival taking into account the unexpected new experience we are all gaining?
- My festival has always been non-commercial and social. As practice has shown, all the world's financial crises (1930s, World War II, 1979, 1987, 1999 and 2008) had a revolutionary impact on the development of cinema. This time I see an opportunity to help young talents to open up and believe in their strength.
📽💻 The festival will take place on May 16 from 15:00 in a live broadcast on the website https://brukivkafest.com.
And while we are preparing, I offer to watch a film about our festival in 2019:
